Overall Design

DESIGN & PLAN

Students form groups, decide on a group name, design a logo, choose and measure a garden plot and select a recipe.

SOIL & STARTS

Students study seeds, select and plant cover crops, start seedlings for recipes, measure growth and keep daily gardening logs.

GREEN MULCH & TRANSPLANTING

Students process cover crop into green mulch in their garden beds. Starts are transplanted, observations recorded and growth measured.

FERTILIZATION, PEST MANAGEMENT & CROP CARE

Students practice basic organic gardening, understand ecosystem concepts, manage composting systems, fertilize crops, measure growth, record observations in gardening logs.

HARVEST, PREPERATION & PRESENTATION

Students research recipe: history and nutritional values of ingredients grown in garden. Crops harvested and processed; recipe prepared and presented. Class rates recipe based on categories of safety, knowledge of ingredients, link to global issues, flavor and aesthetics.
