We partner with our local community members to help give back and support the awesome projects going on beyond HAAS. Check out this list of opportunities!

 

Opala Outreach

Description of Project: Students will travel to various island locations (ex: Hilo Bay Front, Pohoiki, Kapoho, Lava Viewing Site, etc.) and perform site clean-ups.  Students will also interact with site visitors and communicate hawaiiana and natural history, ecological information and the value of malama aina.

Required Attire: closed toed shoes, work clothes, hat, water bottle, sunscreen

Ohana Kokua

Description of Project: Students will travel to HAAS Ohana sites to help with a variety of tasks that include but aren't limited to tutoring/academic assistance, outdoor projects, playing and interacting with the students during recess, teacher directed tasks such as prepping for art projects or filing papers, etc.


Group #1 will travel to Ohana sites located in HPP.

Group #2 will travel to Ohana sites located in Pahoa.

Required Attire: Work/play clothes, water bottle

Mountain View Growers Hydroponic Strawberry Farming

Description of Project: Students will travel to the Mountain View Growers farm where they will build and apply skills about hydroponic strawberry farming.  Project tasks include planting/transplanting, harvesting, hydroponic system maintenance, and general groundskeeping.

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, work clothes, hat, water bottle, sunscreen

HUI LA’AU

Description of Project: Students will work with middle grades students, assisting them with various projects and school assignments. Students will also work with Hui La'au teachers to help supervise, plan and implement activities/projects.

Hilo Food Basket

Description of Project: Students will travel to the Hilo Food Basket Distribution Center where they will work together to fill the “Keiki Backpacks” for our East Hawaii community schools, learn about food distribution, help stock shelves, and help feed hungry East Hawaii community members. Volunteers please come prepared to lift, haul, pack, sort, and work together!! (Smart phone usage is restricted but we will still have lots of fun! :)

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, comfortable clothes to work in

Hana Ka Naia - Traditional Canoe Restoration

Description of Project: I am looking for a team of HAAS students who want to learn canoe building skills.  Our job will be to restore and refinish the HAAS canoe.  Project tasks include sanding, scraping and painting the inside and outside of the canoe.

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, and a positive attitude are a must!

HAAS Video Production

Description of Project: I am looking for a team of students who want to learn and apply video production skills, no previous experience required! This service learning project will allow HAAS media production teams to film, edit and produce promotional videos that highlight all the wonderful things HAAS accomplishes.

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, and a positive attitude are a must!

HAAS Handy Services

Description of Project: Initially, students will help repair the sports shed, build a cubby for recess sports equipment, and participate in grounds maintenance and construction like rubbish removal , creating extra parking behind the green/shade houses, pineapple planting and basic yard care/landscaping. With the experience students gain from working on campus, students will get the opportunity to assist elderly residents in the community with basic handy man services.

Required Attire:  Closed toed shoes, long pants you can get dirty, hat, water bottle, sunscreen

Pana’ewa Zoo Discovery Forest and Watershed

Description of Project: Students will travel to either the Pana’ewa Zoo or the Hale o Lono fishpond in Keaukaha.  At the zoo students will help plant and maintain native plants in the discovery forest and will help build a traditional Hawaiian hale.  At Hale o Lono students will help build and maintain fishpond walls and monitor water quality.

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, work clothes, hat, water bottle, sunscreen

Pohoiki Mural Painting

Description of Project: Students will design and paint murals on permitted structures at Pohoiki Beach Park. Students must have artistic abilities/experience, be focused and self-motivated, respectful and trustworthy. Please note that there is no swimming or wandering permitted during this project.

Polestar

Description of Project: Polestar is a farm located in Kapoho. At polestar, students will be participating in a variety of projects such as construction, cooking, gardening, painting and others based off of student interest.

Required Attire: Closed toed shoes, work clothes, water bottle, hat, rain jacket!!!

Student Leadership

Description of Project: Students will work on planning and preparing for student activities, like assemblies, dances, fundraisers, etc. Students will also help maintain the HAAS website blog and newsletter.


Only those students currently elected to student leadership are eligible.

Required Attire: School appropriate clothes

Independent Project

Description of Project: People can help their community in a wide variety of ways, and here at HAAS we encourage all students to be active community contributors!! Some of you may already be involved in community service of some kind or know of a project that you would like to get involved in. It is potentially possible for you to get credit for the hours you volunteer.
